The Cove Sentinel | Puffin Lidded Stoneware Jar

Handmade coil-built stoneware puffin jar from Hatchet Cove, Newfoundland.

The Cove Sentinel is one of my recurring puffin jar designs. Each jar is built individually by hand using coils, so the overall character stays familiar while the colour, shape, proportions and size vary naturally from piece to piece.

A rounded coil-built stoneware vessel is paired with a fitted lid topped by a puffin reproduced from a mold made from my original sculpture. Layered blue-green glazes create shifting bands of shoreline, sea and sky, while the puffin is finished with bright underglaze details.

Made as both a functional vessel and a piece of sculpture, it can hold sea glass, letters, keepsakes or small collections, or simply stand on its own as a piece of Newfoundland-inspired ceramic art.

Each vessel is coil-built and glazed by hand, so variations in color, shape, glaze movement and size are part of the work. The puffin form comes from my own original sculpture and is repeated using a mold.
